Top Data Science and Stora Enso Collaboration to boost AI-based Automation

AI-based computer vision applications have great potential for improving work from many perspectives. They can partially automate some mundane tasks, increase effectiveness, bring consistency to the decision-making, and allow employees to focus on their primary functions.

Part of the global bioeconomy, Stora Enso is a leading provider of renewable products in packaging, biomaterials, wooden construction, and paper, and one of the largest private forest owners in the world.

“Today’s operators at factories are overwhelmed by a high number of displays and the information they provide. The need for manual observation forces the operators to stay in the control room and limits their mobility.”, states Christopher Tonk, Digital Solution Advisor, Stora Enso IT and Digitalisation. “Noticing problems in multiple video feeds is difficult in the control rooms. Computer vision applications improve this greatly, but the scalability of the applications has been limited.”

Stora Enso and Top Data Science initiated the collaboration for the “Computer Vision Platform” in 2020. The companies had previously co-operated in other areas, so a foundation for building a solid application platform approach together existed. The co-creation projects delivered the Computer Vision Platform (CVP) in 2021.

“CVP is an intuitive platform service to scale computer vision models across Stora Enso effectively. Users can easily deploy or fine-tune existing models from the application library to their own environment. They can also onboard and share their own models. This allows fast and cost-efficient development and scale-out of computer vision applications across Stora Enso.”, highlights Christopher. ”The Top Data Science team has been easy to collaborate with and their willingness to learn about new industries as well as their domain expertise in AI helped to deliver great results.”, Christopher continues.

Hung Ta, former CTO and Co-Founder at Top Data Science, had a key role in designing the optimal technology approach for the solution. “The collaboration with Stora Enso is always very motivating and energising as their development objectives are business driven and they seek totally new ways of doing things at the same time. We had developed multiple industrial computer vision applications together but enabling and scaling the applications through an intuitive and easy to use internal marketplace – was a new challenge to us.”

Top Data Science brings the best practices, state-of-the-art tools, and world-class expertise in AI and software engineering to help companies build computer vision solutions that manage the full life cycle of machine learning at lower cost and faster manner without coding.
